INTRODUCTION

The 5th International Built Environment Undergraduate Research Competition (BEURC) is an undergraduate competition dedicated to all registered undergraduates in Built Environment programmes at both national and international levels. This competition is also an advanced programme based on the continuation of the annual conducts of BS Undergraduate Research Competition (BSURC) which were held at Faculty of Built Environment (FBE) since 2013. Therefore, this year 7th BSURC is embedded in the 5th International Built Environment Undergraduate Research Competition (BEURC).

The 5th International BEURC is to be organised by the Department of Building Surveying, FBE. It will be held on 26th March 2020 at Faculty of Built Environment, University of Malaya. This competition aims to give an exposure and training to all the Built Environment (BE) undergraduates in presenting and showcasing their research studies. Their research studies will be based on the final academic project (thesis) of the BE programme. The presenters will be presenting their research background and findings based on their respective theses. This competition adheres to the core elements in BE which are building control, building surveying, architecture, planning, facilities management, real estate, engineering management as well as construction management.

The 5th International BEURC will be opened to both local universities offering BE programme, such as Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Perak, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Penang as well as international universities. Potential participation from international level would be from Building Surveying students of Faculty of Built Environment, Liverpool John Moores University. This year, new category of virtual poster presentation is designed for presenters who are not able to be present in person at the competition.

UM students participating in the competition will be mostly from the final year students of all five (5) Built Environment programmes: Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Urban & Regional Planning and Real Estate. The final year students will be presenting the output of their theses.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Dear Participant and Presenters,

In light of the growing global coronavirus COVID-19 concerns, the BUERC 2020 Organizing Committee considers the health and safety of its participants to be the utmost priority.

Therefore, after very careful deliberation, we have decided to change the mode and conduct of the BUERC 2020 to virtual presentation mode instead of in-person presentation. We will deliver a follow-up email regarding specific guidelines and method of virtual submission for the BEURC 2020 soon. The BEURC 2020 Online Competition will be held asynchronously to ensure equal opportunity of participation and virtually (in leu of in-person presentation) to maintain social distancing measures as Malaysia enters the Recovery Movement Control Order period from 10th June 2020 to 31st August 2020.

The BEURC Competition series aims to give exposure and training to all the Built Environment (BE) undergraduates in presenting and showcasing their research studies. BEURC 2019 also serves as a platform for bridging among students, academicians as well as professionals to share knowledge and understanding on construction industry in order to search for a resolution towards a more inclusive built environment that meets the needs of everyone in society both now and in the future. Therefore, with the spirit of BEURC we hope the virtual presentations will help facilitate a more inclusive and innovative built environment cohort despite this time of crisis and uncertainty.

We would like to apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused everyone involved and seek your kind understanding. Please keep yourselves posted with our latest updates via email and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/beurc2020/).

Yours faithfully,
