ABSTRACT

Objectives: Touchless interaction is an interesting solution for the dentist to interact directly with the digital image as the sterility restrictions remains an important issue in the dental practice.  In this paper, we present and evaluate the hand gesture system for interaction and manipulation of 3D digital image via Kinect sensor to prevent infection in clinical settings.

Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among the healthcare personnel. The questionnaire was validated prior to data collection. This study involves assessing  the accuracy and reliability through the weighted kappa .Three measures were used to assess acceptance of proposes hand gesture; Friedman test followed by post-hoc Wilcoxon and average index value. Summated scale and Pearson correlation were used to evaluate the awareness on cross infection and usability of the system for cross infection control.

Results: The Kinect demonstrated moderate to good inter-rater reliability (weighted kappa between 0.4 and 0.8). Perception on hand gesture varies where reset was significantly most comfortable motion whereas select menu was the least comfortable motion. In addition, a positive linear correlation was found between awareness on cross infection and perception on usability of the system for cross infection control (r=0.467, p<0.00).

Conclusions: Touchless hand gesture user interface system has a high potential to be used in the clinical settings and may help to address the problem of cross infection contamination.

Keywords: human-computer interaction; hand gesture recognition; user interface; digital models; study models; Kinect sensor

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE OR NON-ACCEPTANCE

The official notification will be emailed on Oct 20th, 2019. You must contact the scientific committee if notice is not received a week after this date. The notification will indicate if the work has been accepted for competition and non-competition category. The presenters must register to the conference.
