Title: From Invention to Innovation: Driving Clean Energy Innovation at Scale

Biography:

Dr. Feroz is a General Manager at PETRONAS Group Technology & Commercialization, where he leads the research and development of the Renewable Energy Technology Program. He is responsible for new technologies development in the area of renewable energy generation, energy storage and intelligent energy management system as well as green mobility supporting PETRONAS Energy Transition Strategy towards achieving net zero. With 22 years of industry experience, he also has expertise in hydrogen technologies, sand control and management, produced water management, digital twin of production facilities, and net-zero carbon facilities.

Dr. Feroz’s academic credentials are equally impressive, holding a B.Eng. (Hons.) in Mechatronics Engineering from International Islamic University Malaysia and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London. As inventor at heart, he has secured six patents, six copyrights, and trade secrets in the areas of sand management, flow assurance, and upstream production technologies.

Dr. Feroz’s contributions to the industry have been recognized with several awards, including the prestigious 2022 SPE Regional Award for Production and Operations in the Northern Asia Pacific Region. He is known for his innovative thinking and values building relationships and teamwork. He is a mentor to young engineering talents and believes in nurturing future successors. His role as a General Manager of the Renewable Energy Technology Program is a testament to his leadership and commitment to advancing the frontiers of clean energy technology. His vision and expertise continue to drive innovation and progress within the renewable energy sector. He is inspired by the saying of Elon Musk, "People should pursue what they're passionate about. Prof. Dr. Ben Mclellan

Title: Justice considerations in resource supply chains for clean energy transitions in ASEAN

Summary: 

The use of clean energy technologies, including "green" hydrogen produced with renewable energy is important for climate change mitigation. But a transition to carbon neutral energy systems will have direct socio-economic implications for the societies that implement them and the communities that provide resources for these technologies or host the infrastructure. Moreover, the transition will require more "critical" minerals for the technology to be rolled-out widely, which may need the expansion of mining - even potentially into the deep ocean.

This seminar will discuss some of the concerns around energy technologies and the critical minerals needed for them, as well as potential hotspots for social impacts and benefits across the supply chain.

Biography:

Professor Benjamin C. McLellan has been at Kyoto University in the Graduate School of Energy Science since 2010. Prior to that, he was a Post-doc and Research Fellow at the University of Queensland (2006 – 2010), from which he also received his bachelors` degrees and PhD. He heads a research group of around 30 students (3 post-docs; 12 PhD candidates; 12 Master`s students; +αResearch students). His main research themes at present are critical minerals, just energy-resource transitions, sustainability, and coffee. He has specific interests in hydrogen and deep sea mining. He has authored / co-authored over 140 journal articles, and about the same number of conference papers, across a fairly wide range of topics. He is currently in Australia on a Japan Foundation Fellowship. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Resources (MDPI).
